What is GEAR UP SWV?

GEAR UP SWV is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) initiative. This seven-year federal grant program is designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to succeed in education and training after high school. Whether pursuing a four-year degree, attending a community college, or enrolling in a career training program, GEAR UP works to ensure students have the knowledge and support they need to thrive.

GEAR UP Southern West Virginia Concord New River CTC

Here in southern West Virginia, GEAR UP SWV is led by Concord University in partnership with New River Community and Technical College, local schools, businesses, and community organizations. Together, we’re working with every student in the graduating classes of 2028 and 2029 across Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming Counties—starting in middle school and continuing through their first year of college.

Through GEAR UP, students and families can access everything from college and career planning tools to hands-on learning experiences, campus visits, and more. Teachers and school staff also get support and training to better guide students along the way. We’re here to help students dream big—and take real steps toward their future.

Why we serve

In southern West Virginia, we know struggle—but we also know strength. Families here in Mercer, Monroe, Summers, Raleigh, and Wyoming Counties face some tough odds: jobs can be scarce, wages are low, and the cost of dreaming big can feel out of reach. But if you’ve lived here long enough, you also know this—people in these hills are resourceful. We make dos, show up, and lift each other when we can.

GEAR UP SWV builds on that spirit. It’s not about swooping in with quick fixes—it’s about walking alongside students and families, offering support that’s real and rooted. We help students see college and career training as real options, not just far-off ideas. We connect them with mentors, get them on campuses and into career spaces, and show them what’s possible. Because when students in our communities are given the right opportunities, they don’t just rise—they shine. And we believe they deserve nothing less.
