GEAR UP SWV has extended the 2026 Summer Camp registration deadline to May 31 for remaining overnight camps at Concord University and WVU Tech, offering students hands-on career exploration, STEM learning, and college readiness experiences.
GEAR UP SWV Students Showcase Creativity, Career Exploration, and College Readiness at Concord Cool Academy: Tracks to the Future

Athens, W.Va. – Students from across Southern West Virginia spent four days exploring future careers, developing new skills, and experiencing college life during GEAR UP Southern West Virginia (GEAR UP SWV) Concord Cool Academy: Tracks to the Future, held June 16-19, 2026, at Concord University.
The overnight camp provided students with an immersive college experience while introducing them to a variety of career pathways through hands-on learning and mentorship from Concord University faculty and staff. Students selected from one of five specialized tracks: Creator (Fine Arts), Writer (Creative Writing), Teacher (Education), Sports Medicine, and Future Nurse.
A highlight of the week was the camp’s partnership with CoolSpeak, a nationally recognized youth development organization that helps students strengthen communication, leadership, teamwork, and self-confidence. Through interactive workshops and engaging activities, students learned how to effectively share their ideas, collaborate with peers, and develop skills that will benefit them in high school, college, and future careers.
Throughout the week, students worked on projects related to their chosen career tracks while also participating in activities focused on college readiness, personal branding, social media, leadership, and campus life. The camp encouraged students to explore their interests, discover new possibilities, and envision their future after high school.
The experience culminated on Friday, June 19, when parents and family members joined students on campus for a special project showcase. Students proudly presented the work they had completed throughout the week, demonstrating newly acquired skills, creative projects, career-focused learning experiences, and personal growth. The showcase allowed families to celebrate their students’ accomplishments and see firsthand the impact of the camp experience.
“Concord Cool Academy is about helping students see what’s possible for their future,” said Interim IHE Coordinator Jenn Frame. “By combining career exploration, college exposure, leadership development, and hands-on learning, students gain valuable experiences that help them build confidence and take meaningful steps toward their goals.”
GEAR UP SWV summer camps offer more than just fun while school is out. These free educational experiences help students build confidence, explore career interests, develop real-world skills, and stay connected to their college and career goals.
